It's the middle of summer, a time when most people start home improvement projects. Use this time to get a head start on improvements that will help lower high winter-heating bills.

August is the time to think ahead ... to winter.

Energy efficiency blogger BancheroMedia (http://bancheromedia.blogspot.com) announced that August is the month when many of us get started on those major home improvement projects.

A handful that may help save energy are as follows:

1. Furnace Upgrade. Thinking about getting a new furnace? Do it before winter and look for one that is as energy efficient as you can afford. Also, check for rebates from your utility and look for state and federal tax incentives.

2. Furnace Tune Up. No need to get a new furnace yet? Fine, just be sure to clean the air filter of the furnace you have and get a qualified furnace technician to tune-up the unit and make sure its ready -- and safe -- for winter.

3. Get a Set-Back Thermostat. This is the old-fashioned name for an automatic programmable furnace thermostat that will automatically turn on the heating unit when you are home, and automatically turn it off when you are at work. It saves money, and time.

4. Wrap those Air Ducts. Using an insulation wrap on air ducts helps avoid heat loss -- and keeps the heat going into the living space instead of the attic or the crawl space under your home.

These are only a handful of suggestions.
