My Thoughts On iPod Nano Touch and Apple Announcement

Let me start by saying I love how Apple does these events and announcements. The hype generated is nothing but excellent publicity for Apple. It’s almost like they are reinventing the wheel every time they do an event like this or make an announcement about new iPod or so. We all patiently await the newest iSomething to be bestowed upon us. It doesn’t sound a little cheesy, but it’s true.

For a second there I had thought that they had announced a 32gb iPhone. Not quite. That would be something though if they did that this early in the iPhone 3G’s life cycle.

It’s about time that we have a proper update for our iPhone 3G’s. 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 barely did anything. We need something that addresses our concerns. The three top concerns are reception, battery life, and lengthy backups. 2.1 is supossed to fix this. Let’s hope so. We still have to wait a little while longer though, till Friday in fact. This is either because they don’t want to crash their servers today with the billions of downloads or they are pulling some all-nighters to get it done and weren’t able to finish things up by today.

The new iPod touch looks great. It is even more like an iPhone wannabe now with the volume controls, shape, and speaker. It’s cool how it has an internal speaker without any speaker holes. One thing they should have done is got rid of the super scratch prone back on them which seems to have hung around. They did the right thing by dropping the price. I just couldn’t see anyone continue to spend $319 for an 8gb here in Canada any longer. Especially since they have been unloading them with new Macs for students. $259 is a little more reasonable. I still bought an iPod touch for way less however.

The new iPod nano’s are pretty cool. I’m glad they went back to a more rectangle type design. The last ones were almost to short and small to hold onto properly. These will definitely be a big Christmas seller. They do have an accelerometer now but I don’t think that is quite revolutionary selling point on these.

iTunes 8 does look interesting with the new features and the genius stuff. It is available for download from Apple.com but not Apple.ca. That’s weird. Oh well, it’s not like Apple.com has a block on it for Canadian customers.

I believe that by Apple updating the line of new iPods and iTunes, it keeps people interested. Many will just buy one because it’s new. Many probably won’t buy one but it does get the word iTunes and iPod in their head and they may just go an buy some more songs from iTunes. Or they might buy some more apps. Whatever it may be, they want Apple in your head. Maybe this is a plan for world dominance.
