
A significant part of Galveston Island, TX is inundated, 8 hours before Hurricane Ike is forecast to make landfall near the threatened barrier island. Waters will continue to rise this evening.
A Mandatory curfew has been issued in Galveston, TX effective today, Friday, September 12, 2008 through Sunday, September 14, 2008, between the hours of 8:00 P.M. to 5:00 A.M.
Galveston Island streets and roadways are becoming flooded as storm surge intensifies. Extensive flooding is expected for at least the next 24 hours. Flooding has already occured in the following areas: Harborside Drive FM 3005 Stewart Road - West the Downtown District Localized flooding in low-lying neighborhoods has been reported.
Mandatory evacuation in Galveston, TX
Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas has just called a mandatory evacuation for the entire city of Galveston. Those residents who can evacuate themselves and their families on their own are asked to do so now.
Special Needs Evacuation
Residents who will require assistance evacuating Galveston Island due to age, disability, lack of reliable transportation, or other special needs is asked to arrive at the Island Community Center, 4700 Broadway by 2:00 p.m. today to be evacuated from the island
75 buses will transport Galvestonians to shelters in the City of Austin. Buses will provide water. Evacuees are asked to bring the following:
Pillow and blanket
All medications in original bottles
Snacks
Changes of clothing
If you are traveling with children, toys and books
If you are traveling with pets, a crate and food
The City of Galveston will not open any shelters. To call the city for evacuation transportation assistance please call (409) 797-3723.
The City of Galveston has suspended water in different areas of the city as of 10:00 a.m. this morning. The following areas will not have water until further notice: Areas west of 103rd Street the far East End/East Beach area Teichman Point Pelican Island Water and sewer connections have been turned off to protect the system from salt water contamination. Systems will not become operational until bacterial testing has been completed.
