iPhone 2.1 Update Is Here

iPhone firmware 2.1 is finally here. I guess Apple gave us something to look forward to by making us wait a few days. They also saved their servers.

This iPhone 2.1 update is a neccessary one because the iPhone 3G did come with it’s share of problems. I am a big iPhone fanatic, but if there is a problem with it, I’m am going to so say so.

iPhone 2.1 officially fixes the following things:

. Decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls
. Significantly better battery life for most users
. Dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
. Improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and
. Exchange accounts
. Faster installation of 3rd party applications
. Fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications
. Improved performance in text messaging
. Faster loading and searching of contacts
. Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
. Repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
. Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
. Genius playlist creation

That look pretty significant to me. It is still hard to figure out how exactly a software update can lead to better battery life and call quality. I suspect it has to do with the software telling the hardware what to do in a better way. It is probably not that simple but I think it follows along those lines.

There are 2 ways you can do the iPhone 2.1 update.

1. Just simply hit update. This is the easy way.
2. Restore iPhone to the 2.1 firmware

Why would you want to restore? Well my iPhone is jailbroken. I want to make sure that everything updates properly so I am doing a restore. Maybe I am being paranoid but I will just go with it because it isn’t that difficult. If you are jailbroken and just did an update, let me know if everything went fine. It should be so don’t start worrying but I just like to be extra careful with my iPhone.

There is no jailbreak yet, but the dev team is working on it and it probably won’t take that long. They are pros. But it does bring up the debate of whether or not jailbreaking is worth the time and effort.

So if you were facing some of these problems listed above, have they been fixed for you after iPhone 2.1 update? I am still waiting on the restore to finish so I will post my results later. Has this created any further problems for you?
