One of Armenia's top generals who played a crucial role during the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan commenting on Azerbaijan's latest military intrusion in Nagorno Krabakh said the resumption of war is less likely, but if it starts, the minorities in the Azeri Army will not want to fight for the regime of Ilham Alyiev.
General Arkadi Ter Tadevosyan, speaking to the reporters today in Yerevan, said Azeri Army has quantitative advantage over the Armenian Army. However, he added that quantity does not mean quality. "In the Army of Azerbaijan the majority of the soldiers are the representatives of the ethnic minorities living in the country. These are Talysh people, Georgians and the Lezgian people, who are not very much interested to to fight for Azerbaijan, where the national wealth only belongs to few clans and not the people. The Internal situation is stressed in Azerbaijan and that is also reflected in the Army."
Ter Tadevosyan also said that in case Azerbaijan resumes the hostilities initially it will have some success because of military technology and the money it will use. Many soldiers will die, but at some point the Armenian side because of the human factor will take the advantage. "In Azerbaijan the officers force the soldiers to flight. Those minority soldiers, whose rights are abused, know that this is not their country and they will not want to die for that land. In this case the Armenian side not only will push back the aggressor, but will continue the military actions on the other side of the border."
He also added that Azerbaijan's weak point is the oil pipeline and the oil wells. If Azerbaijan starts the military action against Armenia, the latter will immediately target the oil wells and the pipelines. "Only 15 percent of that oil belongs to Azerbaijan. The rest belongs to BP and the United Kingdom won't allow Azerbaijan to risk its wealth by starting a war against Armenia."
The war rhetoric has been in the Armenia in Azerbaijan during the entire process of negotiations with Armenia. Two weeks ago Azerbaijan intruded the defense line of the Nagorno Karabakh Army. The incidence took six lives.
Tomorrow the mediators of the Minsk Group are arriving to the capital of Nagorno Karabak Stepanakert to push further the peace process based on the six Madrid Principles. These principles basically call for the withdrawals of the troops and a referendum in Nagorno Karabakh to determine the region's final status.
Azerbaijan says it accepts and welcomes the Madrid Principles, but will not agree to Nagorno Karabakh's independence if the latter votes for it.
On July 4th and 5th U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will visit the region and will meet the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia pushing the peace process. She will stay few hours in Baku meeting the President Alyiev and the Foreign Minister Mammadyarov and then fly to Yerevan where she will spend the night and have meetings with president Sargsyan and Foreign Minister Nalbandyan.
The ultimate goal of the effort is peace. Something like this seen in this video, where the Armenian and Azeri nationalities can dance holding their flags and friends can cheer.
