McCain, Obama Visit Key States in Presidential Race

U.S. presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama return to the campaign trial Friday, as they visit a handful of states crucial in the battle to win the November election.

McCain, the Republican nominee, will hold campaign rallies in Florida - in Miami and Melbourne - while Democratic candidate Obama will hold rallies in Virginia and Missouri.

The two men appeared together Thursday night in New York City at an annual charity dinner named in honor of Al Smith, a former governor of New York state who waged an unsuccessful presidential campaign in 1928.

In keeping with tradition, McCain and Obama took turns poking fun at themselves and each other - but they also ended their speeches with high praise for each other.

Also Thursday, McCain taped an appearance on late-night talk show "The Late Show with David Letterman." The comedian has taken regular jabs at McCain ever since the Republican candidate canceled a scheduled appearance last month.

Recent polls show Obama has taken a significant lead in the race, both nationally and in several competitive states.
