Nintendo DSi In Japan Sells 170,000 Video Games

As if you expected any less, Nintendo’s new DSi portable gaming console flew off shelves as Japanese consumers braved both Godzilla and a bad economy to get their hands on one.

It supposedly took only two days for Nintendo to move 170,000 units of the 200,000 available DSi. If you are worried about importing one, have no fear; Nintendo is prepping more DSi units to be shipped out to retailers, ensuring everyone will be able to get their DSi fix.

The new console went on sale last Saturday, at the beginning of a Japanese three day weekend, although a lot of gamers were clever enough to pre-order the system to avoid waiting in long queues.

The updated handheld is selling for around 18,900 Yen, or the equivalent of approximately $179.

Nintendo said it will be shipping out another 100,000 to stores this week, perhaps looking to break a previous record of 450,000 DS Lite units sold during its first month on the market.

No date for an overseas launch of the DSi has been provided but it is expected to happen before or around summer 2009.
