Israel, Hamas apparently want calm restored

Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai says Israel hopes the Gaza Strip ceasefire can be extended, despite the recent outbreak of violence in the Hamas-ruled territory. Vilnai said it looks like things are calming down.

Seven armed Palestinians have been killed in IDF operations in the strip, which prompted a Kassam and Grad rocket barrage Wednesday on the south. No one was hurt by the rocket and mortar fire, although several residents in Sderot suffered shock.

Vilnai said Israeli troops were deployed in Gaza over Tuesday night in order to blow up a tunnel that was to be used in a major attack against Israel that would have torpedoed the ceasefire. He was speaking Thursday on Army Radio.

Hamas spokesman in Gaza, Fawzi Barhoum, said an extension of the ceasefire agreement would require consultations by the Palestinian factions that approved it. Barhoum added that an extension would not prevent the resistance from responding to acts of aggression by Israel.
