iPhone malfunctions less than other phones'

A study released by SquareTrade surveyed about 15,000 mobile phones and found that the Apple iPhone 3G has the lowest malfunction rate in its first year of use compared to Blackberry smartphones and Palm Treo smartphones.

According to the study, Apple iPhones had a 5.6% malfunction rate, compared to RIM’s Blackberry smartphones malfunction rate of 11.9% and Palm Treo’s malfunction rate of 16.2% in their first year of use.

The number one malfunction for the Apple iPhone, according to the study, have been touchscreen issues, which accounted for a third of all Apple iPhone malfunctions.

In addition, about 12% of all iPhone users reported having accidental damage done to their phone. The report’s authors had the following to say:

"It’s likely that any iPhone owner can guess the reason iPhone accidents are so common," the authors wrote. "After two minutes of handling an iPhone, it’s impossible to escape noticing that the handsets are incredibly slippery. The form doesn’t help, either. The dimensions make for a difficult grip, especially for those with small hands. These two factors conspire to make the iPhone more accident prone than just about any other handset model we’ve seen."

The study did not take into account any software issues these phone may have. Both RIM and Apple have yet to give a comment regarding the study.
