A Victorian couple in Australia have appeared in court in far north Queensland after allegedly giving their baby daughter the illegal drug ecstasy.

Police say the couple and their two-month-old daughter were holidaying in Cairns when the baby became critically ill on Sunday.

Paramedics rushed her to Cairns Base Hospital were she is now in a stable condition.

Police allege the baby had been given half a tablet of ecstasy.

They have charged her 24-year-old father and 22-year-old mother with grievous bodily harm and possessing a dangerous drug.

The couple, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, made a brief appearance in the Cairns Magistrates Court this morning.

They were not required to enter a plea.

The matter was adjourned until next month so police can prepare a brief of evidence.
