The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries says 76,510 new cars were bought last month.
The chief executive of the Chamber of Automotive Industries, Andrew McKellar, says it is a solid result, considering the worldwide financial downturn.
"Given all the challenges that the global economy has thrown at us in recent months, to be able to come out with a million vehicles sold in a calendar year is an outstanding result for the Australian economy," he said.
US car makers Chrysler and General Motors reported a big slump in sales last month, while the French car-maker Citroen bucked the trend with a 30 per cent rise in sales.
