Commissioner Poizner Announces Sentencing of Sacramento Woman for Scamming Victims Out of More Than $40,000

Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner today announced the sentencing of Doris Sutton, 43, of Sacramento, for stealing insurance premiums from thirteen victims. She was sentenced to serve 180 days in county jail, five years probation and ordered to pay $41,923 in restitution on January 5.

"Anyone who attempts to steal insurance premiums for personal gain should beware - Department of Insurance investigators will find you and bring you to justice," said Commissioner Poizner. "I will not tolerate the exploitation of California consumers by thieves."

A CDI investigation revealed that between April 2007 and April 2008, Sutton collected insurance premium payments from thirteen clients, and failed to remit the premiums to an insurance carrier. After pocketing the funds, Sutton issued bogus certificates of liability and automobile insurance coverage. Additionally, she transacted insurance business, collected premiums and issued certificates without a valid insurance license.

This case was prosecuted by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.
