NPR is reporting that the Baltimore mayor Sheila Dixon is indicted for theft and perjury. I learned about this while updating my Twitter and saw one of the users posting this breaking story about Sheila Dixon's indictment.

Here is what NPR reports about Baltimore Mayor's Indictment.

"Maryland's state prosecutor says a grand jury has indicted Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon on 12 counts, including perjury, theft and misconduct in office.

"The prosecutor's office announced the indictment on its Web site on the final day of a four-month grand jury session in which a City Council member and a prominent developer who once dated the mayor were indicted on public corruption charges.

"Dixon's attorneys say they and the mayor will make statements later this afternoon."

The website of the Office of the Mayor has the following information about Sheila Disxon.

"Mayor Sheila Dixon became the 48th Mayor of Baltimore on January 17, 2007, succeeding Mayor Martin O'Malley. She holds the distinction of being the first woman ever to hold this position.

"For two decades in public office, Mayor Dixon has been a champion of neighborhoods and a pioneer for women and minorities. In 1987, she won a seat on the Baltimore City Council representing the 4th Council District, where she served for 12 years. In 1999, she became the first African-American woman elected as City Council President."
