AccuWeather.com reports a coastal storm formed on Monday night and is spreading a swath of slippery snow across the Carolinas and southeastern Virginia before it departs this evening.
Some residents of North Carolina will have to dig out from as much as half of a foot of snow by this evening. A wider area from South Carolina through southeastern Virginia will have 1 to 3 inches of snow, while the mountains of North Carolina could also have a fresh 1 to 3 inches of snow.
Roads will were becoming snow covered and slippery in a large part of North Carolina, including: Greensboro, Raleigh-Durham and Fayetteville. Flight delays and cancellations will also be a problem for these areas.
The accumulating snow will slice south of Richmond, Va. and just east of Charlotte, N.C. For a time, accumulating snow can work into Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Va.
Many areas away from the mountains of the Carolinas have had no snow so far this season. As a result, this storm will have tremendous shock value.
The storm will race away to the northeast and spread some snow showers into Cape Cod, Mass. by tonight. Unlike the last coastal storm that clobbered New England with heavy weekend snow, this storm will continue to be steered toward the Northeast and will not seriously impact Atlantic Canada. Instead portions of Atlantic Canada can receive a light snowfall from the departing system.
