Mr Brown praised the new President as a “man of great vision and moral purpose” who would make a valuable contribution to the work of dealing with issues such as the global financial crisis and climate change.
Speaking to journalists in Downing Street, Mr Brown said:
"The whole world is watching the inauguration of President Obama, witnessing a new chapter in both American history and the world’s history. He’s not only the first black American president but he sets out with the determination to solve the world’s problems.
"He is a man of great vision, he is a man of great determination and energy, and he is a man of great moral purpose."
The Prime Minister said Mr Obama understood that the world faced “extraordinary times” and “unprecedented challenges” and had displayed “great courage” in taking forward economic proposals similar to those in Britain and other countries.
Mr Brown welcomed Barack Obama, then a candidate for the Presidency, to 10 Downing Street in July last year.
