President Obama today emphasized that the United States must end its dependence on foreign oil.

Not only would ending such dependence help the United States in terms of security and world reputation, but Obama recognizes that the science of Global warming is beyond reasonable doubt, and that we must act now to combat climate change or continue to put us all and our planet in peril.

Principally Obama's stated goals are to allow states to have their own emission standards - California and other states tried to pass this under Bush, but were denied -, and to greatly improve fuel emission standards by 2011.

This is a very nice step in the right direction, but by itself is far from efficient. Obama should go further. A good step would be to make Amtrak electric, and perhaps also work toward having our bus system electric as well.

Turning our Public transporatation system "green" would drastically cut our greenhouse gas emissions. In addition putting people to work in this endeavor would increase jobs, possibly increase use of public transporation - thus helping the enivornment even further -, and could therefore help with economy.

So it seems to me that we can say "good start Mr. President! Now let's go further!."

I hope that he does go much further indeed.
