The ten year old file storage service has been finally brought to an end by the new Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz just after a day she took the charge. Carol explained that the internet giant must be saved with serious measures, even though tough. Carol further told that the popularity of this service no more supports viable existence of this service when compared to Yahoo Mail and Flickr. The CEO points out that shutting down the Briefcase service will help Yahoo focus better on more broadly used services.
However, Yahoo Briefcase has been done justice by its closure. Ever since its launch with 25 MB storage space 10 years ago, its popularity was going down rapidly with rapid conquests of new and larger storage online services. The company also mentioned this fact in its statement saying – “usage has been significantly declining over the years, as users outgrew the need for Yahoo Briefcase and turned to offerings with much more storage and enhanced sharing capabilities”.
In this online world, there are many serious rivals to the Yahoo Briefcase service, Microsoft’s Sky drive being one of them which offers huge storage space of 25 GB for a cost very dear to all, free.
Google has also shown signs of launching a free online storage service called GDrive. Reports have pointed out to GDrive’s inclusion in Google Pack Bundle of free softwares. GDrive, as the report says, “provides reliable storage for all of your files, including photos, music and documents [and] allows you to access your files from anywhere, any time and from any device - be it from your desktop, web browser or mobile phone”.
Whether it is the advent of new and mass storage online services or decaying of Yahoo Briefcase service, you have to be careful. The users have already been given a deadline of 30th March, 2009 to retrieve their data stored on Yahoo servers. Those who are still using the service should save all their data on their computer before 30th March, 2009 or else you will loose them permanently.
