Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's 50th Anniversary North American tour has begun on February 3rd. The Dance Theater will spend in the Washington D.C. 5 days and will finish their national tour on June 14 of 2009 in Brooklin after touring around the country.
Today's event is totally sold out, but the first couple will spend the evening by sitting in the president's box. Family friends will accompany Barack and Michelle. As the NYTimes reminds "in an interview before his inauguration, the president said he and his wife liked having Friday date nights."
Not only is it good that the first couple is showing a good example of a date night out, but also going out to see a high quality art. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is one of the nation's best dancing groups and attending a concert like this Obama is sending a good signal that he likes good art. Hopefully these types of things will bring high quality art into spotlight.
Tonight the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will present The Anniversary Highlights.
"This brand new program features excerpts from many of Alvin Ailey’s most popular and beloved ballets. Spanning each decade of Ailey’s phenomenal career, from the dance that launched the Company in 1958 to his final piece thirty years later, this stunning retrospective demonstrates the tremendous range and resonance of one man’s genius."
Obamas and the audience will see rarely-seen gems and revisit favorite works, including the quintessential masterpiece Revelations in its entirety.
