Primitive décor is a style of living. It is supposed to evoke feelings of taking one back to colonial times when things with décor was simple and flaws were welcomed.
It is an antique that reminds you of your childhood or your grandparents. It takes you back to your roots and history of your family lineage.
Primitive country décor usually deals with nature. Natural woods, fibers, colors in earth tones. Greens to imitate grass, reds and yellows to imitate autumn.
Primitive décor gives one the feeling of warmth and being safe, happy and reminiscent. The style also lends itself to my realm, the Primitive Doll.
Primitive dolls are usually soft, made from natural fibers and usually rag stuffed or sawdust filled for the real primitive style. Others can be filled with Polyfil stuffing too. Each doll is then aged or made to look old and worn. I sand each doll to create holes or worn spots and use a special staining mixture to coat the dolls and make them look old, like they have come out of an attic or have been well loved. The clothing mocks the primitive décor style by using earth tone colors of greens, reds, and browns. A lot of primitive dolls are soft but then have contrasting hard parts such as twig arms and legs. This adds texture and different media to the dolls. Placing the dolls between the primitive furniture and décor in the room creates magic and makes the room "POP".
Primitive décor can be found at local flea markets, antique shops, though you will pay more, and if you are lucky enough to have a primitive shop nearby, well there you will find all sorts of goodies to buy. Primitive décor is easy to recognize. It is usually the rusty, old and worn items you see sitting at the market. When looking for items look for items that look antique, warm, and is in its rawest form.
