What a society have we become. A dot dies and it's national top story. A cat is put to sleep and its another top story in the nation which claims leadership role in free world. Now the turn is Martha Stewart's domestic animals. The Associated Press found it necessary to report that the much loved dog kennel blast of Martha Stewart, about which she had written in her blog, has died.
The way AP reports is "Martha Stewart's chow puppy was one of 17 dogs killed in an accidental propane explosion at an eastern Pennsylvania kennel.
"The domestic maven wrote on her blog that she was "deeply saddened" by the death of her dog, Ghengis Khan, in Friday's blast at Pazzazz Pet Boarding, a kennel in the Pocono Mountains that breeds and trains show dogs.
"Fifteen dogs were killed in the explosion, and two more died over the weekend."
Please don't get me wrong, I am an animal lover and care about them very much, but this story is more sad than it seems. The point of my criticism is neither Martha Stewart nor her dog about which she blogged in her blog, but the AP and our society.
Here is why I feel that way.
The story is sad because there was an explosion and 17 dogs got killed. AP puts the name of Martha Stewarts in its story title to sell the story because many people will read it. Let's assume for a second that AP's intentions are more altruistic and that they want to use Martha's name to raise an awareness about the tragedy that killed 17 dogs.
The problem here is that it's our careless society that may not pay attention unless the story is linked to a celebrity name. If it was like Explosion Kills Seventeen Dogs less would probably care. However, when we see the name of Martha Stewart in the title we zoom on the story.
Last comment: so sorry for the dogs. Very beautiful dog by the way.
