Australian ABC reports on the upcoming trial of Josef Fritzl and the high financial stakes that are involved in it.
Josef Fritzl may have to pay a fortune in compensation to the daughter he kept as a sex slave in an underground bunker if he is found guilty at a trial this week.
But with creditors chasing him, the 73-year-old Austrian may only be able to pay his victims by selling his story and for media access rights to the house where he incarcerated them for 25 years.
Fritzl goes on trial later today and will plead guilty to incest, rape, sequestration and grievous assault for imprisoning his daughter Elisabeth and fathering seven children.
But he will contest charges of slavery and the murder of one of the children, which carries a life sentence.
Bankruptcy proceedings will also be opened against the retired electrical engineer, with creditors claiming 3.5 million euros ($7 million) in unpaid bills and taxes.
