Most of the briefing room had a good laugh, but CBS White House correspondent Chip Reid apparently thought it was a vicious attack, and pressed Gibbs on the point.
Here's how it all unfolded. See the attached video, but if you can't here is a little part from the transcript.
For those without video, here's a transcript of Reid's question:
"When you referred to the former vice president that was a really hard hitting, kind of sarcastic response you had. This is a former vice president of the United States -- is that the attitude, is that the sanctioned tone toward the former Vice President of the United States from this White House?"
Gibbs responded by focusing on the substantive portion of his answer to Cheney question, saying that while Bush didn't prosecute terror suspects, President Obama has already started prosecutions.
Hopefully Gibbs answer helped calm Reid down, but if not, he should consider a couple of things. First, lighten up -- most people like Gibbs' sense of humor. You don't have to laugh at it, but don't be the sourpuss ruining it for everybody else! Second, if you're interested in decorum, start with Dick Cheney, who spent an hour berating the President of the United States.
