The West African fruit has been tested to see if it restores cancer patients’ appetites. Chemotherapy dulls the taste buds and leaves foods tasting metallic and bland. The fruit contains a natural protein, miraculin, that has sugar molecules that bind to the tongue. Others are incorporating it into their daily diets for those not-so-good tasting foods.
Further research is being conducted to test whether it can benefit patients with diabetes and obesity.
