CBS Reports Israel Strike in Sudan on Hamas-Bound Convoy

The United States news network CBS is reporting that in January 2009 the Israeli Air Force carried out an attack in Sudan on a convoy of trucks heading towards Egypt.

Acting on intelligence, the IAF attack targeted some 17 trucks said to be carrying weapons from Iran which were to be smuggled into Gaza for Hamas. Sudanese officials say that 39 people were killed in the strike and dozens were wounded.

According to SudanTribune.com the airstrike was an embarrassment to Sudan's government and it discusssed the matter with Egypt's government to gather more information in order to formulate a response.

This report was from REKA Israel. But one of Israel's main newspapers Jerusalem Post also confirms the news and has an attached video report of the Israeli Air Force in flight.

JPost writes: "In what could be interpreted as a veiled threat to Iran and a hint at an alleged far-reaching IAF air strike on a convoy of weapons bound for the Gaza Strip, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Thursday asserted that "Israel has never had stronger deterrence than it has gained in the last few years. Those who need to know are aware that there is no place that Israel can't reach."

"The greatest threat, Olmert continued, is the Iranian threat. "Israel is not the main player but it's contributing to the international effort to prevent Iran's nuclear armament," he said

"The prime minister went on to say, "The main player who should lead on Iran is the United States," an apparent call on the Obama administration to become more aggressive in its approach to the Iranian program."

One starts to think, is Israel toughening its position or taking on a new role in Africa?
