Eiffel Tower, Pyramids Go Dark For Earth Hour

The world landmarks ranging from The Eiffel Tower to the Egyptian Pyramids and from the Greek Acropolis to the Sydney Harbor go dark for the Earth Hour.

As the ABC Australia reports "In Paris, hundreds of monuments and buildings, from the Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral to the Arc de Triomphe, all went dark. For safety reasons, the lights on the Eiffel Tower were switched off for only five minutes.

"Some 371 landmarks were due to power down worldwide, including Niagara Falls, the Empire State Building, the Las Vegas casino strip and Beijing's Bird's Nest Olympic stadium. The switch-off was due to end in Honolulu, capital of the US state of Hawaii."

While 80 countries joined the Earth Hour many people don't know what it is and don't follow it. I read several opinions in Twitter some from UK and some from the United States that go like this: "No-one in england informed me about "earth hour" so I missed it. Shame that." Or here is another one that asks "What is the deal with Earth Hour?"

The Earth Hour starts at 8:30 PM in your local time. It's just about 8:30 here in the Eastern United State and I see many many lights in our neighborhood in North Carolina being turned off and the entire neighborhood going dark.

I just read another opinion that Boston looks the same. So apparently not much change there. Is there anyone from New York City or Washington D.C.? How is the Earth Hour going in your local area or in your neighborhood?
