Gordon Brown was speaking at a press conference during the Progressive Governance Summit in Vina del Mar, Chile. Over the past five days the Prime Minister has visited Strasbourg, New York, Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Santiago in a bid to build consensus on how to tackle the economic downturn.
The PM reiterated his call for countries to avoid protectionism and to work on reshaping international economic institutions. Over the past week he has also agreed to urge the G20 to provide $100 billion in trade credit.
The PM said:
“I first of all understand people’s worries about jobs, people’s worries about their homes, people’s worries about businesses… The action that is happening in London today I both understand and we will respond to at the G20 with measures that will help create jobs, stimulate business and get the economy moving.”
The PM attended the conference alongside Argentinian President Cristina Kirchner, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
During a one-on-one meeting with US Vice President Joe Biden in Chile, the PM discussed the London Summit, as well as the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
