Frederick County Sheriff Charles Jenkins said to Baltimore Sun today that a Middletown man who fatally shot his wife, three children and himself left six notes discussing his family's financial hardships. The family was almost in half a million dollar debt.

Baltimore Sun reports:

"Jenkins said that, in the notes, Christopher Wood wrote of his love for his family and apologized for his actions. The family was about $450,000 in debt, according to Jenkins. The sheriff said Wood was making $97,000 a year as an account manager in the sales and marketing group at CSX Corp. in Baltimore, but the family was trying to sell a home in Florida."

While Sheriff refused to speculate on the motive of the family suicide killing he said relatives told investigators that Wood was being treated for anxiety and depression.

I don't know what prompted the tragic action: debt or anxiety / depression. However, at this time what comes to my mind is the financial institutions that push individuals and families into huge debt taking big risks and knowing that these families can't pay it. This is what brought down this economy. And I am very glad to see the government is moving to protect homeowners or the first time buyers from the unfair and greedy mortgage lending practices.
