Pet insurance is often looked at as a luxury for rich pet owners - is that really the case? The purpose of pet insurance is to help defray the costs of routine care, and to provide financial cover in the cases of accident or severe illness. Unfortunately, it is not just the pets of the rich that are susceptible to accident, or that must get spayed, or have cancerous lumps removed.
In fact, health insurance for your pets makes good sense whether you are rich, poor or middle class.
Part of the purpose of any insurance policy is to help spread the cost of care out - by making a small payment each month you avoid the very large payment that would be required in the case of an accident. The company that is providing the veterinary insurance is 'gambling' that your dog or cat will never need very expensive critical care. In the cases that critical care is needed, the insurance company looses the 'gamble' and pays the cost of emergency surgery and the heroic measures that your vet may need to take to save the life of your pet. Some people might say that the money spent on insurance is a waste, as many animals never need critical care. You as the pet owner however, will not be gambling financially, you will be gambling with your pet's life. Is that a risk you are truly willing to take?
So if veterinary insurance is a necessity, what kind of policy do you need for your pet? How much do you wish to cover? Pet insurance is like any other kind of insurance. There are many different types of basic policies. Some policies cover only accidents and critical care, others cover certain semi-routine care, and yet others offer complete coverage on a standard co-pay arrangement to cover routine vet care as well as standard procedures, critical care and emergency surgery. The more a policy covers the higher the monthly premium will be.
When choosing veterinary insurance it simply makes sense to choose the best policy you can afford. At the very least choose a policy that will protect your animals in the case of accident or emergency. Having such a policy will give you great peace of mind and a sense of financial control. More than that, you will have the luxury of knowing that the health of your beloved pets will be taken care of in the best possible manner.
