With StrongWebmail, when a person successfully enters their username and password, they must receive a phone call or text message on their telephone. The phone call gives them a 5-digit code that they enter into their computer to confirm their identity. This ensures that even if someone’s password is stolen, the thief still can’t access the victim’s email account because they don’t have access to the user’s phone.
To prove how secure StrongWebmail is, the company is offering $10,000 to the first person to break into the CEO’s email account. StrongWebmail hopes that this contest will bring attention to the username and password crisis. According to Symantec’s Global Internet Security Report, email accounts are the third most popular item for sale on sites that sell valuable stolen information, behind credit card numbers and bank account details. The report also notes that attackers are concentrating on victimizing consumers for financial gain.
