The news about China blocking Twitter came this morning as users started to report problem and Fox News reported that Beijing turned up the volume on the "Great Firewall of China" Tuesday, blocking nearly a dozen Western Web sites and search engines.
Some Chinese bloggers wrote and Twitted that Twitter, Flickr, YouTube and blocked in China. Hopefully this is a temporary move by the Chinese authorities.
PC World writes that "some Chinese dissidents had appeared in recent months on Twitter, which provided a platform for free speech compared to the heavily patrolled blog services in China. Twenty years ago on Thursday, hundreds died after Beijing ordered soldiers into its central Tiananmen Square to suppress peaceful demonstrations for democracy. China has stepped up monitoring of known dissidents ahead of the anniversary to prevent any public disturbances."
Twitter has been used in China not only for free speech, but also for foreign visitors and travelers. People who tour in China used Twitter and other types of social media to allow their relatives, friends and loved once to keep up with them. Writing about where in China they are, what they are doing and uploading pictures from beautiful Chinese destinations to Twitter Picks are common practices with many visitors.
