Sun's Big Freeware Virtualization Tool Update

Sun has recently released a big update to their free VirtualBox virtualization tool, available to anyone who is interested, bringing it to version 3.0. With the update comes a myriad of updates and changes. For example, users are now able to run more graphically intensive applications in their guest operating system due to their support for 2.0 of the Open Graphics Library (OpenGL) standard. Also, support for USB devices has also risen.

Now, you can manage your iPods, different storage media devices and even to your complicated mobile phones all inside the virtual machine.

It’s clear to see how much virtualization can help consumers as well as big companies. With virtualization, you are allowed to run another separate operating system on top of your host operating system. As you can imagine, you are no longer restricted or stuck with one type of OS. Also, think about the energy you can be saving by running 2 or more operating systems on just one physical machine! The other neat part about utilizing virtualization is its mess free configuration.

Because a guest operating system you install in VirtualBox is separate from your host operating system, glitches and problems experienced in the guest OS does not interfere with your host OS. This allows developers and home users to test out software inside their virtual OS rather than on their host OS where their important data resides. If something goes horribly wrong, you can rest assure that the changes will not carry over.

Want to start over? No problem! With virtual operating systems, you can easily just delete the virtual hard drive and rebuild the machine from scratch. No longer do you need to mess with dual booting. One great example is with Linux. A lot of people want to try this free operating system but they just don’t have the knowledge or courage to attempt at a dual boot scenario. By installing Linux inside Sun’s VirtualBox application, everyone can experience the benefits of Linux without the hassle or complicity of dual booting. If they don’t like it or decide to actually install it on a physical machine, simply delete the file to reclaim disk space and that’s it!

A common disadvantage of using virtualized operating systems in the past was due to limited hardware support. With virtualization technology growing faster than ever, companies such as Sun and Microsoft, have developed new updates that close the gap between real physical machines running an operating system to that of an operating system that is virtualized within it. VirtulBox 3.0 update is a proof of that statement.
