Creativity Slump in Hollywood

I know that many people are suffering through this dreadful recession. I also know that those people also enjoy an escape when they can. How do they escape? Movies, of course. Movies have always been there through the tough times. Whether it was “The Wizard of Oz” in the Great Depression or today with blockbusters like, “Transformers”. However, I tend to see a pattern that Hollywood (ever since the beginning has followed.

Adaptation seems to be the way of the Hollywood world. Creativity is obsolete. Everything is based off of something else.

Take the "Wizard of Oz." This film is nothing more than a simple adaptation of the book. There are some changes, however small. For example, Dorothy’s shoes were silver in the original and in the movie they were turned into the famous ruby shoes. Movies have small degrees of originality. If you take such prestigious movies like, “Forrest Gump” that was also based off a book. It was a fantastic film, don’t get me wrong but it was not original.

What triggered these thoughts of lack of originality? Bruno. I just came from the theatre and to be honest with you, I expected so much more from this much-hyped film. I came from the theatre feeling a combination of disappointment, disgust and repulsed. I wanted to be blown away by a funny, witty, creative script. Instead, I was turned off by the constant joke of “gay” or “not to be gay”. I am impartial to the point. I just wanted to see a film that would be clever. There is nothing clever about a four minute segment about gay sex. There is also nothing clever about a “gay man” adopting a black baby in exchange for an IPod. I don’t get it. I think that the recession has hit not only the automotive companies but our writers, too.

When we have to watch movies based off of action figures, there’s a serious problem. I know that there were movies in the past with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But, if you look back even on those movies, they’re terrible. Batman, Spiderman, Superman…. the list goes on with movies based off comics, cartoons, or graphic novels. Where is the writer that sits in front of their computer for 9 hours at a time and comes up with an ORIGINAL idea? That’s what I would like to know? I want to go to the movies and see something other than a comic book or a watered-down version of Borat. I want original material that is not only funny but clever and witty. I am sick of these “shock value” movies that either have numerous things blowing up or just shots of male genitalia.

Maybe I am asking for too much? I just thought since I am shelling out 10.50 to see these movies that I could see something original and not just something I could watch on TV or read in a book. Why do these pathetic writers get to cash their paychecks when they are doing their jobs? I want to take my hard-earned paychecks and use them to escape into someone’s created world for 90 minutes. I want to be entertained… Is that too much to ask? Apparently so.
