Pre-Championship favorite Tiger Woods is having a difficult day at the British Open, missing fairways and greens as the charge of the heavy brigade takes over at Turnberry, with a trio of past champions making their moves in perfect scoring conditions. Tom Watson holds the lead at five under after a near-flawless round of 65 and the two Marks — Calcavecchia and O’Meara — are poised just two shots behind in third place.
With warm sunshine and no breeze at the Ailsa golf club (this golf ourse is currently ranked as Britain’s number one golf course by two leading golf publications), the leaderboard is a sea of red as player after player dips under par. Three players share second place on four under — John Senden of Australia, who has completed his round of 66, Steve Stricker, a 15-year time-server on the US PGA Tour, and David Howell, a Walker and Ryder Cup player who beat Woods in the 2006 HSBC Champions event.
Watson drove the ball superbly all day and holed a few vital par-saving putts in a return to the glory days that won him five Open Championships, two Masters and a US Open.
Woods has struggled with the driver and with his long-irons and has managed to hold together a score of one under due to some solid holing out from the critical distance of six to 10 feet.
Sergio Garcia has completed a round of 70, once again showing vulnerability on the shorter putts.
