Ross Fisher started well the July 19th day of the 2009 British Open at Turnberry as leaders begin to labor. We are likely to see the deservine winner of the 2009 British Open soon.
Ross Fisher has taken a two-shot lead in the Championship after birdies at the two opening holes. In the match behind overnight leader Tom Watson missed his par putt at the first after hitting his approach into the left greenside bunker.
Fisher’s birdie at the first came via a fine approach to 15 feet and a firm putt. At the second it was less straightforward. He missed the fairway to the right from the tee and dragged his second shot down the slope to the left of the green. His pitched recovery rolled at perfect pace down the slope and into the hole. At five under par he leads by two from Watson and Mathew Goggin.
Ernie Els continues his challenge despite a dropped shot at the 12th. A wicked kick to the left for his tee shot at the next made it difficult to attack the pin and his running approach dropped down the slope to the left of the green from where he promptly pitched into the hole.
Ernie Els, winner in a marathon five-hole play-off at Muirfield in 2002, lost in another play-off to Todd Hamilton at Troon two years later. He has three times finished second in The Open and has twice won the US Open.
After eight holes of his final round he is just five shots off the pace after birdies at the first, where his approach finished less than four feet from the hole, and at the seventh where he recovered from the right rough to just short of the par-five green and pitched dead.
