Recently Armenia reported that despite global economic recession it's tourism industry has actually recorded a modest growth. Compared to the same period of last year in the first six months of 2009 the number of travelers to Armenia for recreation has grown by 0.1 percent.
Armenia is of great interest for those who love swimming and mountain tourism, thinks Andre Antonyan, member of the Board of Directors, McKinsey & Company consultancy.
“The climate and the geographical conditions of Armenia can greatly interest lovers of mountain tourism, swimming, bicycling and running. If they know more about the feasibilities of Armenia they will give the preference to coming here and not visiting Kenya, Brazil or Australia. That’s why we should open Armenia for the world”,- said Antonyan after the recurrent 11th meeting of the fund.
The expert says that, for attracting tourists we need to pay a special attention to the reconstruction of the infrastructures of Armenia to attract tourists. It includes the development of hotel and restaurant business, bike tracks’ and bike roads’ constructions, as well as overnight stops for the tourists.
According to Antonian special tour packages should be worked out with world wide tour operators for attracting the tourists. Besides that, the expert thinks, they should include in the training process famous sportsmen which will serve as a peculiar advertisement for our Republic.
Within the main advantages of Armenian tourism, Antonyan mentioned the moderateness of prices.
According to the National Statistics Service of RA, the total number of tourists that visited Armenia in the first 6 months of 2009 has risen by 0.1% in comparison with the same period of 2008. In the same time the total amount of the tourists that visited the country within the mentioned period reached 207.7 thousand, compared to 207.5 thousand people on January- June in 2008.
In the same time, as the sets of data prove, during the accounting period the amount of Armenians going abroad as tourists has been reduced by 1.6%, 202.8 thousand people, compared to the January- June in 2008.
