It is the half year mark for Obama, and he’s putting all his efforts on shifting the healthcare regime. Getting the healthcare reform through Congress is going to be quite a battle, but the question remains as to whether the health of the nation is really being addressed.
With so much emphasis on the healthcare system, there is very little faith placed in the hands of the people who need it the most. If every American was given the information he needed, and the support to make the right lifestyle choices, many of the budgetary constraints of the healthcare system would vanish.
Imagine America without the need for costly health insurance: the people would be healthy to begin with, relying on sickcare only for emergencies. Instead of this ideal situation, we’re looking at an America with obesity problems, increasing rates of diabetes, heart conditions, and other degenerative diseases, all of which are caused by lifestyle choices such as diet and nutrition.
Wouldn’t it be great if instead of trying to fix the symptom (a flailing healthcare system) we could fix the root cause? That is instead of trying to apply a band aid, why not put systems in place to help people help themselves. We don’t need more overworked, overstressed, fast food eating Americans. We need more balanced, healthy Americans.
This is not to say that the changes to the healthcare system are worthless. There is a need for change. It is however important to remember that the change needs to be applied to the root cause of the problem. Why not outlaw soft drink distribution in all schools? Or mandate that cafeterias to offer only healthy whole foods.
Whether Obama or the rest of the administration is able to make the change to a healthier nation or not, the changes are starting to take place. More and more Americans are taking their health into their own hands, learning about the benefits of eating more fresh raw fruits and vegetables, exercising, and taking care of themselves first.
If you’re ready to make the move to wellness, don’t let the changes in the healthcare system stop you. Get healthy despite the system, and enjoy the benefits that come along with improved health.
