Most of your potential employers work on computers most of the day so it's convenient for them to see your work online. You also want to spread your self around the internet to increase the number of potential employers who might take notice.
Here's 5 different ways to market yourself on the net...
1.Display your work on a website and be sure to present art work in a clean and neat composition, just as you should if you were were presenting it in hard copy form (portfolio).
2.Animation can be in the form of an online video. I suggest uploading your demo reel to any video sharing site and then embedding it into your website. Some video sharing sites will allow you to use their bandwidth and not your own service provider's bandwidth on your site, (which they will likely charge extra for).
3.When your posting a demo reel or animation samples online, remember quality over quantity - leave out anything you feel could bring down an impression of your work, even if that means just having one video posted. Your better off showing one solid piece than a lot of not-so-great pieces.
4.Upload your resume and link to sites that deal with hiring personnel for the animation or the entertainment industry. You can also find contacts on these sites and send them a link to your site online demo reel.
5.Apply for jobs online when you see a posting, but studios don't always post available positions. Find studios that you would like to work for and write them an email in the form of a cover letter (contact info is usually on their site), Include a link to your demo reel and attach a resume. I've gotten interviews and jobs this way.
Although marketing yourself on the internet has become increasingly more important sometimes a good old fashioned pounding of the pavement is still called for. It's spontaneous - just like the hiring practices of some studios can be at times. Sometimes projects are green lite and studios will need to crew up right away.
If you know that a company is hiring for a position that you want, and you can get there, by all means show up with a demo reel on DVD and a resume - and be sure to give them a link to your web site and/or online demo reel. Who knows, you just might get an interview on the spot, or better yet - a job!
