Take advantage of free entertainment in your community – parks, museums, exhibits, etc. Go to free park concerts and other community activities.

Don’t spend big money entertaining your children. Buy them an end roll of newspaper from your local paper and let their creativity run wild. Make a game out of ordinary stuff around the house, like tossing pennies into a jar.

Socialize at pot-luck meals rather than at restaurants. Because one wants to be generous to friends and family, there may be huge cost savings here.

Here is a great financial tip from Tip Jar for parents on how to teach money to kids. ""Celebrate saving: Discuss with your kids an appropriate and safe place to keep their money (e.g., piggy bank, plastic container, wallet, etc.). Put a picture of the item for which they are saving on the “bank” to reinforce visually."

We do spend a lot of money on gift giving. Here is one on how developing budget and staying on budget can help. ""Develop a budget and stick to it: Write a list of everyone on your gift list and determine how much you want to spend on each person."
