Hurriyet Daily News from Turkey today reports that the road map between Turkey and Kurdish nation, aimed to normalizing relations and leading to greater democracy has been leaked to the media by Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan.
Ocalan, according to the newspaper, gave some hints to his lawyer about the road map. He was due to reveal it on August 15, but was not able to make the necessary preparations.
Abdulla Ocalan is, of course, in prison, serving life in prison. He is in solitary confinement on the island prison of İmralı in the northwest since 1999.
Ocalan, the Kurdish leader in Turkey has called for more democracy for the Turkish and Kurdish people. He told his lawyers that a new beginning is coming up. “A new process has started, it is as important as the creation of the republic (in 1923) by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Turkish Republic.” This is according to the pro-Kurdish Fırat news agency, which is quoted in the above-mentioned newspaper.
Hurriyet writes that Abdullah Ocalan "came up with a model that anticipated a self-defense mechanism in a bid to end the conflict in the southeastern region. Kurds will also have the right to create an entity similar to a democratic nation and to be organized in different fields of life such as sport, education and religion. This entity will similarly have the right to establish its own parliament and municipality if it can, according to Öcalan. He also dismissed the federal-state system in northern Iraq, finding it noncompliant with his model."
While we all are waiting for further developments, Numan Kurtulmuş, the chairman of the Felicity Party, during his recent meeting with Beşir Atalay, the coordinator of the Justice and Development Party, has offered his proposals to stop terrorism in Turkey, suggesting that the Turkish military should end operations in southeastern Turkey and the terrorist organization PKK should lay down arms.
