UK Welcomes Studnets, Cautions About Novel H1N1 Flu

As students are headed back to school universities and educational establishments are preparing for the upcoming flu season. University of Kentucky welcomed back its students and faculty with the following update on H1N1 flu situation providing tips and helpful advise on what needs to be done in case of flu cases on the campus community.

The University of Kentucky welcomes you to campus this fall! As we begin a new semester, we would like you to know that University of Kentucky officials are closely monitoring the evolving Novel H1N1 outbreak. UK's Pandemic Planning Workgroup has been meeting since April, and we continue to work with local health agencies to receive the most current information. The safety of students, faculty, staff, and patients remains our top priority, and contingency plans will be implemented quickly if the situation worsens.

This website will be updated as needed throughout the semester with new information regarding Novel H1N1 and the University's plans. In the meantime, we hope that you enjoy your time at UK and take full advantage of all that the campus has to offer.

In the interest of public health and welfare, UK would like to remind you of the following:

If you are feeling ill, especially with flu-like symptoms (fever greater than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea), we ask that you NOT attend activities on campus.

o Students should consult their individual class syllabus and speak with their instructors if they must miss class due to illness.

o Employees should consult with Human Resources and/or their direct supervisors regarding sick leave policies.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing and/or sneezing. Immediately throw the tissue in the garbage.

If a tissue is not available, cough or sneeze into the crook or elbow of your arm, NOT your hand.

WASH hands with warm soapy water. If soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers and gels are a suitable substitute. (The university encourages you to carry your own personal size container of hand sanitizer.)

Avoid touching your nose, eyes, and mouth.

If you do feel ill, please contact your physician. Current UK students may visit the University Health Service on campus. Call 323-INFO (4636) to speak with a nurse or 323-APPT (2778) to make an appointment. Employees and visitors will need to contact their personal physician and/or a local Urgent Treatment Center.

We thank you for your attention to this matter!
