Steam Car Breaks Speed Record

Steam power puts the car speed at 224 kilometer per hour (139.2 mph). The previous record, achieved in 1906, was fixed at 203 miles per hour.

The steam car team just surpassed the century old record in Mojave desert.

According to Xornal the British team lead by Charles Burnett III succeeded on August 26 reaching a new speed record for steam powered vehicles at the base of Edwards U.S. Air Force in the Mojave Desert, USA. The Briton broke the record of 1906 set at 203 kilometers per hour while driving his car at 224 miles per hour across the plains of the Mojave Desert.

The 1906 speed record was reached in Daytona Beach, Florida.

"The steam car tests are exactly complementary to what we do here every day," said Maj. Gen. David Eichhorn, Air Force Flight Test Center commander. "That's why we have these natural resources. So that just like they are pushing this car to its limits to see what it can do, we too push our aircraft to their limits to see what they can do and so we can keep a technological edge."

What's next? Perhaps, after holding the record for nearly a century, the American team may want to claim the record back. Thus, yesterday's speed record may have set a precedence.
