Florida Gov. Charlie Crist on Friday appointed his former chief of staff George LeMieux to occupy the bench for the state of Florida in the U.S. Senate vacated by resigning Cuban-born Sen. Mel Martinez, said the governor. Earlier this morning the word was already traveling and sources close to Florida Governor Charlie Crist today assured the Americas Journal that he would appoint his former chief of staff George LeMieux.

Florida Governor Crist made the announcement this morning during a press conference in Old Capitol's Senate Chamber. "George LeMieux has the proven strength of character and record of leadership Floridians can trust will serve our state well in the coming months,” said Governor Crist. “I have had the great honor to work with so many hard working public servants who choose to put service above self in ways that inspire and encourage me to continue my commitment to the people each and every day. George LeMieux has been a tremendous example of this very type of commitment.”

In Crist's list for the post were also a Florida Republican Representative Clay Shaw, the prominent Cuban attorney Roberto Martinez, Coral Gables, and lawmakers Lou Frey and Jennifer Carroll, among others.

George LeMieux now will have to resign the presidency of the prestigious law firm Gunster Yoakley to assume the senate seat of Florida between now and November 2010. He has served as Deputy Attorney General of Florida State, a position which in English is called Deputy Attorney General.

The first Cuban American to reach the U.S. Senate, Mel Martinez resigned several weeks before they left office.

George LeMieux, who lives in Fort Lauderdale and is 40 years old, is considered a politician loyal to the governor of Florida, in whose shadow he has worked in recent times by his successful gubernatorial campaign in the state. The new senator from Florida served as chairman of the Republican Party of Broward County, north of Miami, between 2000 and 2002.
