The lions were secured at the time of the incident and had no contact with the boy. He fell nearly 15 feet into the enclosure and suffered head injuries.
Boston EMS spokeswoman Jen Mehigan said to WHDH-TV that the accident happened at about 3:30 p.m. She said it wasn't immediately clear how the boy got into the pit.
Although the 16 year-old's injuries were minor, TV showed that he was immobilized and put on a stretcher as he was being taken to a hospital. This has been done because of the fear that the injuries could have been head or neck related.
At this time the police and the Franklin Park Zoo officials are not sure how the boy fell into the enclosure.
