A Different Type of Double Standard At Obama Speech

So did you hear the one about the double standard displayed in some Texas schools over President Obama’s speech to the nation’s school children yesterday?

It seems that many parents felt that the President was trying to brainwash their children. Words like socialism and political agenda were being brandied about daily since it was reported that President Obama would address the children. I’ll admit that I needed to look up the word “socialism” so that I could better understand what all the hoopla was about.

Socialism means the theory or system of the ownership and operation of the means of production and distribution by society or the community rather than by private individuals.

Let’s compare that definition with what the President said to our children. First, he addressed students of all ages, not just high schoolers as had been reported by some parents. Some of the things the President said: “I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself.” “Every single one of you has something you’re good at.” “You can’t drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You’ve got to work for it and train for it and learn for it.” Doesn’t sound like socialism to me.

Maybe this is the socialism part, “We need every single one of you to develop your talents, skills and intellect so you can help solve our most difficult problems. If you don’t do that, if you quit on school, you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country.” Hmmm.

What is the double standard? It seems a parent in Texas who refused to let his son see the speech and circulated flyers saying he didn’t want his child to be forced to hear the President had a change of heart when he and his wife saw the speech with a Channel 7 reporter. He remarked that he thought what the President said was just what any parent would want their children to hear. Surprise! Surprise! The children who were interviewed had only positive things to say. One parent, however, said she thought it was “inappropriate” for the President to speak to the students. Inappropriate? To say stay in school?

As the news story was ending, the reporter said that this same school that refused to broadcast President Obama’s speech was going to pull their students out of class to go to the new Cowboys stadium in two weeks to hear a speech by the former President of the United States. I’m sure the parents of that school district have given their 100% approval of this move. Don’t know about you, but that sounds like some kind of “ism” to me. Racism or socialism? You tell me.
