According to ABC Australia about eighty people were arrested during the student car rally in Dunedin this weekend. Students set fires, pelted police with bottles and ripped up trees.
Dunedin car rally is an annual even in New Zealand. It is called Undie 500 and involves a pub crawl from Christchurch to Dunedin in cars worth less than $500.
Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin says excessive drinking is the problem. He expressed his disappointment in the weekend overall. "For two nights ... in that student area, confined to about two blocks, there was chaos, and that chaos was fuelled by alcohol," writes ABC.
Dunedin is the second-largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, and the principal city of the region of Otago. It has the largest council boundary area of any New Zealand city, and is the hub of the fifth-largest urban area. For historical and cultural reasons and its location, Dunedin is considered one of the country's four main centres, although Hamilton has overtaken Dunedin in its urban-area population, writes Wikipedia.
