The Gunflint Trail is sparsely populated with year around residents, seasonal cabin owners and a few lodges and canoe outfitters that offer visitors a unique wilderness vacation. While summer near the Canadian Border is short it is the most popular season for canoeists and families alike. Camping, fishing, paddling and experiencing solitude is what makes the Gunflint Trail a special destination. Cell phones don’t work on the Gunflint Trail and guests are able to unplug while they relax on a canoe trip in the BWCA or while staying at a Gunflint Trail Resort.
Each resort and outfitter on the Gunflint Trail offers a unique experience. Some lodges are operated by 3rd Generation families while others have new owners. Many of the actual resorts have been around for over 50 years with plenty of history hidden in the past.
The Taste of the Gunflint Trail is a cookbook that features each lodge’s history as well as recipes from owners both past and present. The success of the cookbook encouraged businesses on the Gunflint to offer visitors a special weekend to get a real taste of the Trail.
To get a taste of the Gunflint Trail all one needs to do is stop in at one of the participating lodges. Some resorts have historical presentations while others just offer a taste of their recipe found in the cookbook. Rhubarb Cake, Sour Cream and Raisin Pie and Walter Bunn bars are just a few of the treats offered at a couple of resorts. The real treat is learning more about the Gunflint Trail and experiencing the flavor of it first hand.
September is a wonderful time to taste the Gunflint Trail. The leaves are changing the moose are out and about and the wilderness waters are waiting. The Taste of the Gunflint Trail Festivities may only last for one weekend but the experience and memories will remain with you for many years to come.
A Taste of the Gunflint Trail is held on September 12, 200 from 11am until 5pm. For more information visit http://www.gunflint-trail.com/taste.html
