This morning the administration of the President of Armenia released more information about the upcoming trip, that will take place next week. The head of the Administration mr. Vigen Sargsyan explained the goal and the ideal behind this Pan-Armenian travel.
The goal of the president's Pan-Armenian travel is to meet and listen the opinions of the Armenian Diaspora representatives about the Armenian Turkish rapprochement, which has become a very sensitive issue for many people not only in Turkey and Armenia, but also in Azerbaijan. This is is the first time that the president Sarkisian is embarking on a trip, which is above the matters of state. It is rather a national travel aiming to be present in all centers of the world that has large Armenian populations. These are places where the public opinion of the Armenian Diaspora forms.
The president of Armenia will travel to New York City, Los Angeles, Beirut, Paris and Rostov (in Russia) where he will have meetings with the Armenian population living in those cities and the surrounding areas. Political meetings during this travel are not planned. The only goal of this trip to get to better be acquainted with the Armenian diaspora in those centers.
In each city the president plans to stay less than 24 hours. The only exception will be Los Angeles. There Sarkisian will stay longer to meet with the media representatives and TV reporters from the Armenian TV channels in L.A.
After the Armenian Genocide in Turkey in 1915, which took lives of 1.5 million Armenian people, millions of Armenians fled Turkey taking refuge in the Middle East, Europe and the United States. These people are those who's fatherland has been taken away from them and they are very sensitive to the Armenian Turkish rapprochement. They want to be assured that one day Turkey will recognize the Armenian genocide and condemn the atrocities of the regime of the time.
Turkey to this date refuses to recognize the events as genocide despite many major powers of the world have called and recognized the events of 1915 as genocide. About 19 countries in the world have officially recognized the Armenian Genocide.
