Max Baucus Nominated Girlfriend Melodee Hanes For Top Job

The Associated Press reports that the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee Max Baucus was romantically involved with Melodee Hanes when he recommended her earlier this year to become the next U.S. attorney for Montana. Baucus, see the photo above, is a senator from Montana.

However, Ty Matsdorf told AP that Max Baucus and Melodee Hanes began their relationship in 2008 after the Senator was separated from his wife. Hanes was nominated in March, but she later withdrew saying she had other opportunities she could not pass up.

"The Senate leader who's lately been a major proponent of Democratic health care legislation had submitted six names to a third-party reviewer, who whittled those to Hanes and two others. Matsdorf said the senator sent the three names to the White House with no ranking."

Senator Baucus is well known for his leadership in the work to overhaul the nation's health care system.

This is how he is described on his Senate webpate.

"Whether fighting to expand the Children's Health Insurance Program or writing landmark health care reform legislation that will lower costs and provide quality, affordable health care coverage for all Americans, Max is leading the charge to improve our nation's health care system. For decades he has led efforts to cut the rising number of the uninsured in Montana and to strengthen Medicare and Medicaid."
