Miami Is Number One In International Flights

The rise of Miami as an international flight hub has made it the number one U.S. airport in terms of number of international flights. Miami has more international flights than Kennedy Airport in New York City.

In the first 9 months of 2009 the Miami international airport was the busiest in the nation for international passenger movement. The information is provided by the Department of Transportation in Washington.

As of September nearly 3.7 million international passengers had used the Miami International Airport. This is nearly 400,000 more passengers than the Kennedy Airport in the New York City. New York City's largest airport comes second in terms of volume after Miami.

Yet, this is not an increase for Miami. The number is about 2.7 percent lower than the number of passengers it has last year during the same period. However, the overall U.S. air traffic has registered 0.8 percent increase compared with the same period of last year.

The Department of Transportation report says that in the first nine months of this year South West Airlines carried 75.9 million passengers. This puts the Southwest Airlines in first place followed by American Airlines with 64.8 million. The third place came Delta Airlines with 51.3 million passengers.

American Airlines remains the most active in the Miami airport with more than 60 percent market share. Southwest was the second largest in Fort Lauderdale, with a turnout of 16.9 percent.

In general there have been declines in passenger volume in Miami. JetBlue is the only one with gains. It had 1.9 percent more passengers than last year the same time.
