UK, Northern Ireland To End Writing Checks in 2018

The days of writing checks are numbered in UK and in Northern Ireland. Two days ago the British Council of Payments set the date where it will stop clearing checks written in its territory.

October 31 of 2018 the practice of making payments with checks will end in the UK and Northern Ireland. The vision is that the practice of electronic payments will be so advanced that there won't be any need to write checks. The date is set as a form or encouraging other ways of making payments.

In fact here is one of the latest: accepting and making credit card payments with your iPhone. See how you can swipe your card through iPhone.

The council says that the past 18 months of research shows that this goal is achievable by 2018. By then the ways of electronic payments will have changed so much that no one will notice any change.

Yet, the decision will not be greeted warmly by the British public. People have been writing checks for 350 years. They are accustomed to this practice.

Many charities, non-profit organizations and groups still write checks as a way of payments and as a way of accepting donations.

The Payment Council said that it understands this. For this reason the council will make yearly progress check of how the practice of making alternative bank payments and other types of electronic payments proceed and how the public is being accustomed to them. The final decision will be taken in 2016.

Do you feel comfortable saying goodbye to checks?
